Congrats Kacy "Princess" Griffin
clear

Colorado State at Pueblo University senior volleyball player and a young lady that I've had the immense pleasure to know and train for a long time, finished her collegiate volleyball career with a couple of very well deserved honors and I can't begin to express how proud of her I am.  Kacy was named a first team Academic All American as well as the 2013 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Player of the Year.  She carried a perfect 4.0 GPA into her senior season and is graduating with her Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. It's difficult enough to graduate with Honors but to achieve such high success in the classroom while playing a collegiate sport with all of the additional demands on your time is a true testament of how hard this remarkable young lady works and yet she still finds time to live her life to the fullest.

Something I always preach to the young athletes I work with is that if you are able to continue to play your sport in college especially as a scholarship athlete make damn sure you leave college with a degree that will help you become a successful person in the next phase of your life. Kacy has wonderful family support in life, the classroom and in sports. Her father Paul played in the NBA and is a successful businessman, brother Ryan played basketball at Sam Houston State University achieving high honors both in college and in his professional life, brother Cory played basketball at St. Edwards University and is a basketball coach in the San Antonio North East Independent School District. You can't forget the glue that holds this family together and that is their mom Kim!!

CONGRATS KACY!!!  We are very proud of you.

Birthday Training!!
clear

Saturday was my 52nd birthday and I spent part of it in the gym training and I would have it no other way!! A very long time ago back...WAY BACK in 1973 my dad took me to the YMCA in Detroit. All I wanted for my birthday was to go with him to lift and thus began my journey and obsession with STRENGTH. Back then you had to be 12 to lift weights at the YMCA so I spent all summer learning the Olympic Weightlifting movements with a stick and empty bar so I would be ready when I went with him. He and everybody else in the gym had me loading and unloading the bars for them as my "warm-up"!! Someone would call out a weight and I had to load it...had to earn my way onto the platofrm.  Boy I sure could add weights on the bar by the time I started my training!!

40 years later and I am still training hard and heavy as I continue my journey.

One of my favorite exercises
clear

Today I saw a video of the Hurricanes using an exercise that I taught head coach Mark "Hammer" Hammet and strength and conditioning coach Davie Grey when I was last in Wellington back in February. In fact I talked about this exercise with Hammer way back in 2006 when I was visiting the Crusaders.  Ben Franks and I have spoken several times about the exercise.

However, the story with this brutal exercise and how it became one of my favorites goes way back to the mid-1970's!!  It starts with me pushing my sisters up the hill by our house in their wagon. One day I was messing around in the parking lot of the local grocery store and decided to take a shopping cart to the park and push my buddies up the hill at Huron Park....to my mom's surprise I took that cart to Rogers City when we moved up there (thanks to my step-dad hiding it in the moving truck). I had seen the huge hill in front of our new home.  Man, I'd load that thing up with my weights and get to pushing, then walking it back down backwards...don't know why I just did!!!

I have continued to use the exercise for so many years and it has been good to me!! I've pushed heavy loaded grocery carts up so many parking garages and hills...too many to count in far more places than I can remember.

Watch the video of the Hurricanes pushing the loaded carts up the hill outside of the weightroom and ask yourself...   Will I be welcomed back when I make my visit in January?  I wonder myself!! It sure is cool to see some of the greatest rugby players in the world using your training ideas!!

Invictus
clear

Way back in 2003 while I was training boxer "Jesse" James Leija we traveled to Melbourne, Australia as he prepared to fight for the World Championship belt held by Kostya Tszyu. Our training gym was an awesome place called "Underworld" where they made us more than welcome. Anyways, the owner Matt Trihey gave me his business card and the poem Invictus was printed on the back. I had never read it before and for some unknown reason after I did it really seemed to speak to me and to this day it continues to do so.

Now I have had one hell of a life and like most people I've suffered though hard times and at other times was on the top of the world.  No matter what life has thrown at me I have always survived and come out on top.

I do not and I will never compromise my integrity nor my philosophy. I thank God for my unconquerable soul.

Invictus
by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me unafraid,

It matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

Franks the Tank
clear

Rugby World Champion New Zealand All Blacks closed out a remarkable and historic season last weekend with a hard fought victory over Ireland. They finished undefeated!!! This is something never before achieved since the sport became professional, which increased the number of matches played in a season.

A special 'shout-out' and congratulations to Owen Franks and Ben Franks who train with me at PowerSport!! Well, in reality I go all the way to New Zealand to train them!!!  Already got my plane ticket for my next journey there in January.

Was awesome to watch Ben score when he picked up the ball and powered his way over the try line...and when I say powered his way I mean just that...he POWERED HIS WAY!! There was no denying this beast of his ultimate goal and that was to score!!

Genna put up a great picture and nicknamed him "Franks the Tank"!!  What do you think? Would you like to tackle this beast?
